A refreshing discussion on Leadership by our "Leaders"

On Friday President Obama met with House Republican Leaders to discuss how there can be more bi-partisanship in the governmental process.

It's refreshing to see and hear that the possibility exists for, at least, some dialogue and action to help move the U.S. forward, instead of the deadlock we seem to be in on a number of issues.

The Republicans took the initiative to invite the President to address them and the President accepted. Two good moves. And while both sides have disagreements in many areas...from healthcare to the economy, the only way to resolve them is through intelligent discourse.

As CNN reported, the reactions of a number of attendees was positive:

"I hope that the conversation we begin here doesn't end here, that we can continue our dialogue in the days ahead," Obama said.

The day "went very well," Boehner replied later. "There are issues we do agree on" and Republicans will work to find "common ground."

We should "set aside perhaps the things that the president believes in that we philosophically don't, but if there is some common ground we ought to go ahead forward with those," said Rep. Eric Cantor, R-Virginia.

Friday's meeting, he said, was "the kind of discussion, frankly, that we need to have more of."

Let's hope it continues and grows a more positive and proactive government!

Israeli leadership in Haiti

How is it possible that Haiti, a country that is so close to the United States (and its sophisticated healthcare and rescue operations), is left to look to Israel, a nation on the other side of the world, for real hospital care during its devastation.

Why were the Israelis able to set up the only field hospital (with technologically advanced healthcare data capabilities) while the U.S. and other countries couldn't get out of their own way? Is it because Israel is used to disasters and really knows how to deal with them with immediacy? Perhaps they don't have the bureaucracy that hinders other rescue missions? Or maybe they just "get it."

Whatever it is, the nations of the world would be smart to take a hard look at their procedures and figure out how to follow them.

Honoring a leader

While we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. today, I wonder how many of us think about the incredible impact he had on all of us. His non-violent practices helped to turn the civil rights movement into a civil rights reality (although we still have a lot more work to do) on so many levels for so many different people.

If you were around to witness his influence on society firsthand you saw an amazing transition. If you weren't...you've experienced his effect in ways you may not even realize.

"enLightened Leadership™" seminars on the horizon

I've been working quite a bit on my "Mastering enLightened Leadership™" group on facebook, building programs on becoming an "enLightened Leader™" and working on another book on the subject (which will, hopefully, be out soon). However, I haven't put many, out of region, Public Seminars on my schedule. That's about to change.

In the Summer, and possibly in the Spring, they'll be some fun trips that will include, "enLightened Leadership™" workshops. You all know that I like to have fun and make sure that everyone in my seminars, classes, and workshops do too!

I'll keep you informed. They should be together shortly. Hope you'll join me!

A lesson from a real leader

I just received this from a friend. Benjamin Franklin has always been one of my favorite people. This quote is an example as to why I feel that way.

Benjamin Franklin realized this truth when he wrote the following note to John Paul Jones: "Hereafter, if you should observe an occasion to give your officers and friends a little more praise than is their due, and confess more fault than you can justly be charged with, you will only become the sooner for it, a great captain. Criticizing and censuring almost everyone you have to do with will diminish friends, increase enemies, and thereby hurt your affairs."

It's that time...

I hope that you use this day, 1-01-10, to resolve to be a Leader of the 1st magnitude - in life and whatever business you're in, or will be in.
