How government leaders get the populace to fight

We're viewing one of my favorite movies this week...Why We Fight.
After you've seen it you get a new and/or broader perspective on how leaders can get their people to do just about anything...even lay their lives on the line - by wrapping information into a propaganda machine and manipulating the media and the public for power, profit, and political gain.

It's based on President Eisenhower's farewell address - one of those speeches that has stayed with me my entire life (at least a specific part of it). Beware of the military-industrial complex...was his warning, and that's from a Five Star General who was the Supreme Allied Commander in World War II.

The film takes the viewer through WWII, Vietnam, Iraq, and other conflicts and includes interviews with people from both sides of the political spectrum including members of the CIA and military.

Why We Fight is a movie that makes you think about things you've been told over and over again your whole life. And leaves you with the question: "How do we let them get away with it?!"
The fault may just be within ourselves.

  1. Although sometimes one has to "bend" the truth when it comes to convincing someone to do the right thing it is sometimes necessary for the greater good.

Although it does boggle my mind what is crammed down our throats on a daily basis. For example: I know someone who is a very good person. She is always thinking about other people, does good things, and is overall someone I would consider an ethical person. Despite this she actually and truly thinks that the majority of the people who are Muslim are violent people. It blows my mind that such an intelligent and thoughtful person can be so naive/brainwashed.

Although maybe not the most appropriate response... I do believe that more Christians have killed in the name of God than Muslims have(of course I have no empirical evidence as this moment, although I'm sure there is.)

  2. Ryan,

Yea...it's a shame when people get into that mindset. More people have been killed in the name of God than for any other reason. Just a shame and a mockery of the LOVE that religion is supposed to preach.

She's a prime example of the type of person that propagandists set their sights on.

  3. This movie was a little hard for me to swallow. It is absolutely disgusting that some people are willing to profit off of the destruction of a society, but what makes it even worse is the fact that the American Government does it everyday. As a "superpower" we should try to stop illegal and immoral behavior, but at the same time we should not push our political and religious views onto other people. There is a fine line between love and hate, but unfortunately America is hated because we are so incredibly ethnocentric and intolerant to different ways of doing things.
