Combining the Seven Deadly Sins and the Ten Commandments

For years I've thought about the Seven Deadly Sins and the Ten Commandments and how relevant they are to our world today. I've read and re-read them and found them, while interesting and somewhat meaningful, lacking some very positive influences.

First, I gotta say that they throw around a lot of negativity. Plenty of "Thou Shalt Nots" and not much what "Thou Shalt." So I've kinda made a combind list for our lives today. Not that the other ones don't hold water, but...let's take a look.

The 8 Deadly Sins that have become Commandments and what to do about them:

1. Ignornace - Listen, learn, read.
2. Intolerance - Be open to other's values, cultures, and beliefs.
3. Being Overly Serious - Laugh a lot. Especially at yourself. Laughter, humor, and lightness are the jewels of life.
4. Greed - That stays. Don't take advantage of others...period.
5. Distain for love and sex - What's better than love? And...how else are we gonna continue as a species?
6. Lack of empathy - Care for your fellow beings. It's that old, do unto others thing, AND walk a mile in someone else's shoes idea, AND that could be me perspective.
7. Hypocracy - Do I really have to say anything about that? Just look at CEO's, politicians, religious leaders, hmm...almost everybody. Stop it already! Live a caring life and do as you say.
8. Violence - If we were took care of the first seven, then violence wouldn't nearly be the problem that it is.

Well...that's my list. Got any others? Just add 'em!

I think we need a mental overhaul as a global society. Maybe changing our Sins and Commandments (or at least recognizing that there's a severe need for new ones) will help lead us out of the morass we're in.

  1. I personally would put Ignorance and Intolerance together, as you can't be one without the other.

I would also add Apathy. I know its similar to Lack of Empathy, but Apathy covers more. People sometimes just don't care about ANYTHING, not just lacking empathy for people, but everything general.

PS: #6 has two ANDS... which I think I would get points removed from my paper if I did such a thing...

  2. Hey Dan,

What about Jelousy? I think its the root source of alot of the 8 deadly sins you mentioned, especially greed and violence. Alot of our problems stem from our emotions and how we control and express them. Oh, and who distains love and sex? if someone does their not doing it right.

  3. Ryan,

You make some good points. Ignorance and intolerance do go together. But...you can be ignorant and tolerant. That would mean that you're inclusive, however you let some leaders lead you around by the nose...or get into consumerism without thinking...stuff like that.

Apathy would stand alone, I think. A good one to add.

The two ANDS...hmm, they're there for emphasis (geez...good catch though!). Glad I'm not gettin' graded!!

    Evan,

Jealousy's right up there! Could fit into greed and lack of empathy...but it also can stand on it's own. Certainly a Deadly Sin that's a real destroyer.

About the distain for love and sex. Just look at religious laws against so many aspects of them. It's so hypocritical!! And...so repressive.

  4. Dr. Goldberg,

I thought you might get a kick out of this one:

This is pure ignorance. If Representative Westmoreland wants the Ten Commandments displayed in the houses of Congress, shouldn't he be able to name them? Respective to your ideas, I think Westmoreland touched up on a number of your combinations: Hypocracy, Lack of empathy, Greed, and...Oh yeah, IGNORANCE!!
